January 2015: New numbers from the CDC show that 1 in 68 children in the United States has autism; boys are five times more likely to be diagnosed (1 in 42).

We don't know why, but North Carolina's autism rates are even higher. Older numbers show that 1 in 70 children has autism, and 1 in 43 boys.  More recent numbers have not been released, but most likely the rates will mimic the national rate and be higher.

The national nonprofit organization Autism Speaks seeks to provide a network of support for families affected by autism, and to fund "biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a possible cure for autism." (www.autismspeaks.org))
